Zyrtec (Reactine)

Zyrtec Introduction

Zyrtec is an antihistamine also known as Reactine. Antihistamines are prescribed to treat symptoms of hay fever and other allergic reactions. As its name suggests, antihistamines work by opposing histamines, the hormones responsible for the itching, sneezing, runny noses and watery eyes associated with an allergic reaction. The hormones are activated due to an irritation that the body perceives as a threat to its well-being. At times, histamines may cause more than these symptoms; they may block the bronchial tubes that could make breathing difficult. Zyrtec medication can alleviate these symptoms.

Zyrtec Indications

Aside from the prevention of allergies, Zyrtec also inhibits motion sickness, nausea, vomiting and dizziness.

Some antihistamines may be used to treat chronic uticaria, a persistent rash that looks like hives.

Zyrtec Side Effects

One of the most common side effects of antihistamines, including Zyrtec, is drowsiness. Expect a sleepy feeling while on Zyrtec medication.

In children, serious side effects of Zyrtec include:

  • Convulsions
  • Unusual irritability
  • Unusual excitement and nightmares

In adults, some of the serious side effects may include:

  • Difficulty urinating
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling faint
  • Mouth-, nose- and/or throat dryness
  • Irritability and/or hysteria

Zyrtec Warnings

Always talk to your doctor first if you have known allergic reactions to antihistamines or if you have allergies towards certain foods, preservatives or dyes.

Also take the time to inform your doctor about your diet. It is an important that you refer to your doctor if you observe a low fat diet, low protein diet or if you regularly drink alcoholic beverages as this may have an effect on taking Zyrtec. Your doctor may prescribe a change in lifestyle before adopting a course of Zyrtec.

The probable effects that Zyrtec may have on an unborn fetus have not been established, but drugs that contain cetirizine have not been proven to cause birth defects in pregnant women. However, studies show that certain amounts of antihistamine may be passed through breast milk. Babies are more prone to the side effects of antihistamines and among the side effects are unusual excitements or irritability. The flow of breast milk might also be decreased. It is therefore not advised to take this medication if you are breastfeeding.

If you are taking sedatives or tranquilizers, never take this medicine without your doctor's approval.
